Along with the release of iOS 16, Apple has also announced the Apple M2 chip, the second generation of the M series chipset. Built on the success of the M1 series chipsets, the Apple M2 chip is here to take things to the next level with a new-generation CPU, GPU, and other new and improved features.

The Apple M2 chipset is designed to maximise performance while consuming the least amount of power. The first devices to use the Apple M2 chipset were also announced today at WWDC. The M2 chip was first found in the Apple MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook.

Apple M2 Chip Announced: Features

The second-generation M series chipset is built on top of second-generation 5nm technology and contains over 20 billion transistors. The chipset supports up to 24GB of LPDDR5 unified memory (RAM). The new 16-core neural engine can perform up to 15.8 trillion operations per second, which is 40% faster than the previous-generation SoC.

The octa-core M2 chipset has four performance-focused cores and four power-efficient cores. There are four high-performance cores with ultrawide microarchitecture, 192KB instruction cache, 128KB data cache, and shared 16MB cache, as well as four high-efficiency cores with wide microarchitecture, 164KB data cache, and shared 4MB cache. When compared to the M1 chipset, the CPU performance is 18% faster.

There is also a new 10-core GPU with a larger L2 cache that is said to provide 35% better GPU performance than the M1. Other features include 50% more memory bandwidth, 100GB/s memory bandwidth, ProRes encode and decode, and up to 6K external monitor support.

The M2's next-generation media engine and a powerful ProRes video engine for hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding allow M2 devices to play back more 4K and 8K videos than ever before.
