This article explains how to set up Personal Hotspot and use it with Instant Hotspot, as well as how hotspots work and the requirements for using them. The instructions are specific to iOS 12, but they should work with other recent iOS versions as well.

How to Turn on Personal Hotspot

Turn on Personal Hotspot after it has been enabled on your data plan:

1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.

2. Tap Personal Hotspot on the Settings screen.

Note: Check that Cellular is enabled, which is located directly above Personal Hotspot on the Settings screen. There are a few fixes you can try if the Personal Hotspot option is missing.

3. Turn on the Personal Hotspot toggle switch on the Personal Hotspot screen.

4. Keep the Wi-Fi password in mind. This password will be used to connect other devices to the hotspot.

When you turn on Personal Hotspot and don't have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or both enabled, you're prompted to enable them or only use USB.

Enable Instant Hotspot Using Continuity

The Personal Hotspot on your iPhone (or cellular iPad) shares online access to any Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Instant Hotspot without requiring a password.

To begin, ensure that the iOS device you intend to use as a hotspot is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID as the Mac or iOS device to which you intend to provide internet access. Each device must also have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.

Instant Hotspot requires the following:

  • iPhone 5 or later with OS 8.1 or later
  • An iPad (4th gen and newer)
  • An iPad Pro, Air, or Mini (all models)

You can use Instant Hotspot to connect to the devices listed above that are running iOS 8 or later, as well as an iPod touch (5th generation) or newer. Macs running OS X Yosemite or later will also work.

1. To connect a Mac to a hotspot device, open the menu bar, select Wi-Fi status, and then select the name of the iPhone or iPad that is providing the Personal Hotspot.

2. To connect an iPad, iPod touch, or another iPhone to the hotspot device, navigate to Settings > Wi-Fi and then tap the name of the iPhone or iPad that is providing the Personal Hotspot.

3. Your third device connects to the hotspot without requiring a password.
