Leading Smartphone Market Share Reached a New High in Q2 2022

Premium Smartphone Market in the Second Quarter of 2022

According to Counterpoint Research, premium smartphone growth has been phenomenal year on year. It has classified premium smartphones into three categories: affordable premium ($5400-$599), premium ($600-799), and ultra-premium ($800-$999 and more than $1,000).

When comparing market share in Q2 2021 and Q2 2022, it shows a YoY increase or a downtrend. The Ultra Premium segment (with prices above $1,000) appears to have increased from 12% to 26% in Q2 2022, while the second band of devices priced between $800 and $899 has decreased by 37% from 22% to 15%.

Moving on, the Premium category increased its market share by 5% from 30% to 34% in Q2 2022, while the Affordable Premium market decreased by 35% from 36% to 25%.

In comparison, the ASP of the premium smartphone market has steadily increased from less than $600 in Q1 2016 to around $800 in Q2 2022.

Smartphone OEMs Market Share

When it comes to the market share of top smartphone OEMs in the premium segment, Apple has increased its market share from 56% to 57% in Q2 2022. The upcoming Apple iPhone 14 series will undoubtedly cause a seismic shift in Apple's market share. Following the success of the S22 Ultra, Samsung saw a 2% YoY increase in share.

Moving on, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi have 4% of the total YoY market share in Q2 2022, compared to 7%, 6%, and 6%, respectively, in Q2 2021. Vivo recently established itself as the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the premium category, owing to the success of the X80 series.

According to the statistics, Huawei holds 3% of the total market share in Q2 2022, down from 6% in Q2 2021. Other smartphone manufacturers held 9% of the market during the same time period, a significant decrease from 5% in Q2 2021. (YoY).
