Last night's State of Play featured Street Fighter 6, and fans got a first look at the gameplay for the highly anticipated sequel to the iconic franchise. The game was announced earlier this year, and Capcom has now confirmed that it will be released next year, in 2023.

The franchise, which is now 35 years old, is still going strong, as evidenced by its ever-expanding fan base. Street Fighter 6 will include all of the iconic, fan-favorite modes such as Arcade Mode, Training Mode, and Local Versus Battles, as well as two new modes – World Tour and Battle Hub.

Capcom has also confirmed that Street Fighter 6 will be built on the RE Engine, which has previously been used in games such as Resident Evil 7, Village, and Devil May Cry 5.

Street Fighter 6 will have a hyper-realistic look and will be built on the RE Engine.

The teaser trailer released earlier this year showed a shift away from the franchise's iconic comic book-ish style and toward a more hyper-realistic look. Street Fighter 6 will have an updated art style that is "built for a Modern Era," as well as updated graphics and "explosive splashes of paint and striking graffiti treatment."

Fan favourites like Ryu, Chun-Li, and Luke will return in the new game, along with new faces like "Jamie," who will introduce a new, unpredictable move set based on drunken boxing. Iconic characters like Ryu have also undergone some design changes, and he now looks very different from how players may remember him from previous games.

Select Moves:

  • DDT – A powerful throw activated after the first hit of an Overdrive (OD) Flash Knuckle. Useful for when you want guaranteed extra damage.
  • Fatal Shot – Fire an additional shockwave after an OD Sand Blast to secure more damage after trading projectiles.

Select Moves:

  • The Devil Inside – Jamie takes a swig out of his ki-unleashing drink to raise his Drink Level. Higher levels unlock access to additional moves.
  • Luminous Dive Kick (Drink Level 1+) – While forward jumping, Jamie extends his leg and quickly drops to the ground. Useful as a surprise attack or a way to close the distance.

Ryu Select Moves:

  • Hashogeki – Ryu concentrates ki in his palms and unleashes it a short distance forward. Useful as a follow-up after block strings and combos.
  • Denjin Charge – Ryu envelops his fists with the Power of Nothingness, enhancing special moves such as Hadoken and Hashogeki. Ryu is vulnerable while performing this move, so careful timing is critical.
